The process of creating perforations in stamps involves cutting rows and columns of small holes to make the stamps easier to separate without tearing. However, due to size of the stamps, the paper used, the printing presses and the printing process used, some stamps are difficult to separate and some break away from their adjoining neighbours with only minimal handling. Hence, the perforations (the number of holes within a 2cm span) may be changed during a print run. This creates what is commonly called a ‘perforation variety’ and it is a field where collectors operate. Different size perforations can be measured using a perforation gauge.
