Note 2: Centering varies dramatically on early pre-decimal stamps. Prices are for reasonably-centred stamps
Perforating stamps involves cutting rows & columns of small holes. Due to size of the stamps, the paper, the printing presses & printing process used, some stamps are difficult to separate & may break away from their adjoining neighbours with minimal handling. Hence, the perforations (the number of holes within a 2cm span) may be changed during a print run. This creates what is commonly called a ‘perforation variety’ & it is a field where collectors operate. Different perforations, watermarks & paper types were used in the 1938-59 Animal Definitives.
